Cottage on the Bluffs

Our clients bought an old cottage along the cliffs overlooking the breaking waves of Block Island Sound. The family is a group of avid surfers and they wanted to create a vacation home which would allow them, along their friends, to spend as much time as possible by the ocean. They built a new traditional shingle style cottage in the place of the old, but retained some precious parts of the old cabin, such as the flying goose weathervane and some of the original wood made into a barn style door.

The family had two big desires: to take in the gorgeous 270° views of Block Island Sound, and they wanted to gather with friends and family in the single room flowing from the fireplace in the living room to the beautiful dining table sized to fit everyone, to the custom cabinetry of the kitchen. The open floor plan accomplishes their ideas.

Easy access to the patios, lawn and of course the water were designed a step away from the main rooms of the house. A surf board outside shower brings a touch of whimsey.

The Owners Bedroom and Guest Rooms have a lovely water views. There is even a balcony off the Owners Bedroom.

To make the best use of the space in this small cottage, we created tucked-in storage areas including a bar under the stairs, seating nooks and mudroom. Bunks create space for the larger family.
